Christmas For Photographers... Fast Lens ( Canon Edition )
Fast Glass For Challenging Shooting!
In the Nikon Lens Posting, long focal lengths were the way to go. In this posting, as I understand there are many a photographer who work the wedding circuit, fast glass is preferred, especially when you work in churches lit by candle light, and flashes are restricted. The USM Canon EF 50mm at f/1.2 is a fast and high grade lens of the Canon L caliber. Low light situations become much less problematic, and portraiture with amazingly out of focus backgrounds, will be a breeze. If the photographer you have in mind, doesn't already own one of these gems, I'm sure it will be much appreciated during their next indoor/evening photo-session! If a long zoom is still the way you'd like to shop for your Canon photographer, then I can whole heartedly recommend the 70-200mm USM, f/2.8 telezoom, great for portraiture, closeup shots, sports, and wildlife. The lens is fast, silent, and accurate. Assuming your photographer doesn't already own one, it will surely bring a smile to their face, when they get one from you. Getting Close Up To Your Subjects!
So, what if your photographer friend isn't into shooting subjects far away? What if the subject matter of the day is an artistic rendition of the petals and stamen of a bird of paradise, or a candid display of a proud monarch butterfly? In that case, you can most definitely add a fast macro lens to their collection!
Unlike a normal lens with extension tubes, tele-converters, and/or closeup/macro filters, a macro lens is much faster, allows more light through, and is capable of producing images of higher quality, with greater ease than a modified lens. A strong addition would be the 100mm USM macro lens produced by Canon. The photographs your photographer will be able to capture with this will be amazing! If 100mm isn't close enough, then it's time to bump it up to 180mm with the Canon 180mm USM macro lens. Like the 100mm, this lens is designed for closeup photography and has a wide maximum aperture. If your photographer doesn't already have one, or is using the 100mm and doesn't like working with converters, then perhaps it's time to add a 180mm macro lens to their collection!
