Simple Conversations Lead To Experimentation: Black and White Studies

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

A little while ago, I had started to bring some matte prints of my photographs to post, where I work. Got some good comments and some of the other photographers seemed stoked about their own photography. In talking about photography... mine, theirs, and just in general, I got two key things:

  1. The Concept of Black and White Studies
  2. There are some extremely good photographers at work. :)

Regarding #2, I can only say... I've still got so much more to learn! It would be easy of my to think that if I only had THEIR camera and lens, I would be able to take those shots... but I would be fooling myself. The only difference is that those photographers have a better developed eye... something which comes about through dedication, hard work, and repeated attempts to trying to capture what they see. Switching my gear won't make up for that difference in effort. :) But it fires me up, knowing that the amount of potential growth I have ahead of me is so wide open.

Regarding #1, it reminded me of some of the architectural photographs I'd seen at various offices, art studios, coffee table books, etc. You know the ones, black and white, art deco or gothic structures with a harsh starkness to them. The grandeur of the form and structure of the building... all else was just a distraction. They always struck me with a sense of awe.

My Black and White Studies

This first photograph was actually taken after the one that follows. :) However, I just really like the texture of the gravel and the look of the solid chain links. I had composed the shot with the shadow in mind. The idea of a heavy steel balloon was what was crossing my mind when I captured this shot.
