You've probably seen these in the local photography store and wondered what they were. They look like an octopus with a screw mount on the top, or a quick release head.
These are versatile mounts that can be used like a normal mini tripod, a universal hold around tree branches, chain link fences, or any other setting where a slightly rubberized tentacle would be helpful.
The most commonly known brand are the GorillaPods, which come in a variety of sizes for cameras ranging from compact digicams up to a full blown "hefty" DSLR with a sizable lens mounted.
People who own them swear by them. Their malleable shape makes them fairly easy to store and their versatility in positioning and mounting to things makes them great, not just for cameras, but for flash units! *hint* *hint*
