When It Rains, It Pours. My Never Ending Cold
Right now, I'm typing this up while going through the 4th phase of my protracted cold:
- Runny Nose
- Sinus Headaches and Runny Nose
- Throat Pains, Sinus Headaches, and Runny Nose
- Loss of Voice, Coughing, Throat Pains, Sinus Headaches, and Runny Nose
- ??? ( 5 golden rings? )
The worst of it, is that my wife and daughter have likewise been exposed to the same cold bug. My daughter, is starting to go through the effects of her flu shots. My wife, shares some of the same symptoms as me, but is about a day behind. It would seem that in my household, I'm patient zero.
Running counter to my instinct in the past to take cold medication and go to work, this time around, I've opted to spare my fellow coworkers the seasonal pains of catching a cold from a co-worker alongside the current fears surrounding the flu.
All I can say is... everything just hurts. Motivation and inspiration is basically bottomed out, and I am behaving much like my two cats: laying around curled up, occasionally getting up to snack on something, and returning to the aforementioned reclined position. It is not a very interesting activity loop.
Well, enough writing for now. Back to my cycle of seasonal medly of cold virii induced pain.
Thanks to my family for sending me a recipe for easing the throat pain and cough. For the benfit of others, here it is:
Cold/Flu Remedy Drink
- 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
- 2-3 tablespoons of honey
- 1 glass of water to mix it all in
Heat up the mixture and sip to sooth.
An alternative that I prefer, flavor-wise would be:
Cold/Flu Remedy Drink(modified)
- 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
- 1-2 tablespoons of concentrated lemon/lime juice
- 3-4 table spoons of honey
- 1-1.5 glass of water to mix it all in
Heat and sip to sooth. (2 minutes in the microwave about does it)
Fair warning. If your sore throat hurts and has phlem already, the cider may sting a bit. You've been warned.

Here's slight variation on the recipe:
Mix this in half cup of cold water, then add half cup of hot water. (do not put in microwave!) Reason: hot water and microwave will destroy the good stuffs in honey. Honey contains a natural enzyme that does not like hot water and especially, not boiling temperatures. Take with some food to avoid stomach irritation.
Other things that might cause more coughing and/or phlem:
