Anime Expo 2007 : The Week Before, Preparing For The Convention
It's June 23rd today. In a week from now, I will be in Long Beach, California, attending Anime Expo 2007. I have been in attendance since 1994, so this will make it the 13th year I have attended, excluding the year I went to Japan. This is a great event, though it has changed since 1994 and it is now more mainstream and heavily commercialized. Still, every year, you see people with some pretty heavy camera gear there photographing cosplayers in awesome costumes!
It is the event that brings me back to Southern California and gives me time to spend with my brothers and time to immerse myself in this chaotic Japan influenced cultural noise that will revive me and inspire me with new ideas... even as it physically exhausts me with all-day running and all-night Anime watching. It will be a blast!
However... for it to be enjoyable and as stressfree as possible... I must prepare!

A Good Wedding Info Resource For Wedding Photographer's Clients
Got A Client Who Want A Website, But Can't/Won't and Don't Know Anyone Who Can? Send Them To Personal Wedding Website
Really, in this day and age of fairly free online galleries, there are customers who want the personal and custom touch. They want to shop around for the whole package and sometimes, that package includes a vanity/personalized wedding website, featuring their wedding and perhaps serve as a wedding portal for friends and family to come and view and order photographs as well as community with them before, during, and after their wedding!
So, you as the wedding photographer, have just such a customer. They want you to photograph their wedding, but also have a fairly grand idea for an online wedding site, which is either beyond your skills to create or beyond your scope as a photographer to perform. You'd like to retain their services, but have no one you trust to refer them to.

Grey Market Digital Cameras, Friend or Foe? The Manufacturer's Warranty? 3rd Party Warrantee?
So, you're Shopping For A Digital Camera And Find A Great Deal... But It's Labelled "Grey Market". What's Up With That?
If you've been shopping for camera gear online, you've definitely encountered the "grey market" camera gear. You know, they are the ones that cost about $100+ less than the local versions. What's the difference? From a technical point of view... nothing. They're all made in similar places and with the same tolerances. What differs is the manufacturer support of the device and the accompanying instructions... which if you're like me, you're probably googling the instructions ANYways.
So, why should or shouldn't you go and buy a grey market camera? » Read More »»

How To Determine If A Discount Flash Card Might Be a Genuine High Quality Card ( Or How To Avoid Fake High Quality Flash Cards )
That Discount Card Being Sold... Who Makes It? Is it REALLY an Ultra II/etc?
Picture this. It's late in the afternoon, you just heard about a great sale and so you go to check it out. The only problem... no pictures or samples on display, so you don't know if that "NameBrand Super Fast Flash Card" is a top of the line "SanDisk UltraII" or some generic brand card. How do you tell the good cards from the bad cards? Is there an easy way to find out?
The short answer is: yes, there is. The longer answer involves knowing a little bit about serial codes that all flash media is tagged with. This number will usually indicate the following: » Read More »»

Email, Document, Web Content, and Collaboration Hosting With Google Apps ( Low Cost and Reliable Performance Infrastructure! )
Why Manage It All Yourself, When You Can Have Someone Else Do It For Free? ( Google Apps for Your Email/Document/Collaboration/Web Hosting )
From around 1995 through 2004, I had basically progressed through a series of self-taught learning exercises. They kind of went along the lines of:
- Setup my own DNS server and website. Hosted it off of my home DSL line. I coded the site from scratch and maintained the server. ( 1994 - 2001 )
- Switched server to online hosting provider. Pay a high monthly fee. DNS still managed by me. I coded the site from scratch and maintained the server. ( Early 2001 )
- Switched DNS and web hosting to one single provider. They maintained the server, but I was still coding from scratch. ( Late 2001 - 2003 )
- Switched to "Virtual Hosting, I ended up maintaining my own server again. Still high fees. Still coding from scratch. Where was my content!? ( 2003 - 2004 )
- Switched from my own code to using Drupal. ( 2005 )
- Switched from expensive dedicated server and virtual hosting solutions to an inexpensive webhosting solution ( 2005 - 2006 : $50-$100/month hosting fees down to $6/month )
- Switched from trying to handle the masses of junk mail on my hosting web account to Google Apps ( 2005-2006 : 2000+ emails a day without eating into my webhosting traffic! Woot! )
- Moved completely away from server/code maintenance to Content Generation with Drupal, LAMP Webhosting, and Google Apps Email/document hosting.
At various points in time in the last decade, I've had my hosting fees be anywhere from $30/month up to $150/month, because I was trying to do it all myself. The more control I wanted, the more I had to pay. The more work I did, the more I ended up spending. That's crazy. To top it off, I kept seeing a stream of spam hitting my servers and it was a pain to manage them all. I wanted to spend my time creating content, not fighting the hordes of spammers out there! » Read More »»
